Want to study for a degree but don’t think you have the qualifications? Then the Foundation Year is designed for you.

The course helps you to develop the academic knowledge and study skills necessary to be successful on your degree course. If you pass the Foundation Year you will continue onto Year 1 of your chosen degree at Manchester Metropolitan University.

The Foundation Year currently links to degrees in a wide range of subject areas

Why choose the Foundation Year?

  • Provides a route onto your chosen degree course if you don’t meet the entry requirements e.g. if you don’t have sufficient tariff points or if you haven’t studied the specific A2 or AS Level subjects needed for entry to your chosen degree.
  • The content of the Foundation Year is tailored so that it is appropriate to your chosen degree.
  • Helps you to develop the study skills and academic knowledge you will need to start Year 1 of your degree course with confidence.

What will I study?

All Foundation Year students complete the core unit:

Academic Skills for Higher Education

Helps you to develop the academic and study skills required for degree level work.

You will also study a further three units which have been selected by the department that offers your linked degree to ensure that you get the best possible preparation for success on the degree course.

For some linked degrees, the units will be directly related to the degree subject e.g. foundation year students who will progress onto a degree in computing will study units in computing, programming, and information analysis. Other linked degrees offer compulsory units that provide you with a strong overall background in a range of areas relevant to your chosen degree e.g. foundation year students progressing onto the BA (Hons) Social Care will study compulsory units providing an introduction to social care, psychology and humanities.
